Field Trips, Tastings and Tours
The San Juan Islands are home to some great entreprenuerial food & beverage makers who are building companies from the ground up. Take a tour, enjoy a taste!
Wine, Cider, Preserves, Salts and Spices, Beer and more. Many contain local ingredients - all are creating a local economy. OUr field trip offersings on Saturday give you a chance to go behind the scenes and listen to the creativity and ingenuity it takes to boot strap a new small carft food business. And about the Good Food Awards several companies have brought home in national competitions.
Example of Class: On Thursday afternoon we convene in the commerical kitchen at the San Juan Island Grange and enjoy a hands on, delicious baking workshop with Cynthia Burke, a beloved island chef. Meets at the Island Grange commercial kitchen. Learn to bake popular sweet and savory pastries.
Example of Class: Dive into a 2-day honey-based mead fermentation workshop. Fri. 1-4pm, convene at the historic Brickworks in Friday Harbor and learn from master brewer Erik Newquist of Aesir Meadery Co. of Seattle. Fri. you create your mead base fermentation in preparation for Saturday infusions.
Example of Class: Nate Fihn was the creator of a successful cocktail program for the Friday Harbor House hotel for years and is now owner of a private event bartending company, Blind Tiger Bar Services. Join Nate for some fun mixology, Saturday, 1-3pm. Meet at the Waterworks Gallery.
Sign up for dinner and add a raku experience with the delightful ceramic sculptor, Maria Michaelson, co-founder of Alchemy Arts Center. Limited space. This is a sought-after - and fascinating - live fire event. You will take home a cup or bowl, once cooled. Workshop is on the Brickworks plaza, for our dinners.
Madrone Cellars is hosting a special field trip and tasting to learn about their award-winning small scale cider and wine crafting. Enjoy tastings, lunch, and stories with Shaun and Amy Salamida at their farm-based winery and learn about their innovative operation. RSVP required for tour and lunch.
San Juan Isl. Brewery is hosting a private behind-the-scene tour for our participants at 11am on Friday, May 16th. Join Brewmaster Jesse Visciglia for a tour of this creative beer brewery, followed by the option to stay and enjoy lunch in their restaurant. Spaces are reserved for Eye of the Whale, code required.
San Juan Island Distillery crafts spirits from island apples, herbs, fruits, and tree bark to create award winning products created on San Juan. Attend their drop-in tasting on Saturday, open 1-4, out in Roche Harbor to select a take-home marvel. We recommend a preceding lunch at the Westcott Bay Shellfish Farm.
San Juan Island Salt Company now has a shop in town and you can learn about their unique island-made sea salt products and the full range of flavorings they are producing. They also feature Inspired Earth Tea and Chocolates, made on San Juan. Fun family of creative, award-wining makers. Drop by during their open hours.
San Juan Vineyard tasting room is open for guests for tasting Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons from 1-4 for a self guided adventure. Tasting fees paid on site.
Local's Favorite Bakery offers breakfast and lunch options. Only open weekdays (open Thurs/Fri). Sweet and savory baked goods, pizza, and coffee bar. In house and to-go.
