Join acclaimed photographer Robert Dash for a field trip to enhance your photography practice. Robert will help participants explore the connections between nature observation, imagery, and words. Explore the literature of an image – its characters, tension, composition, metaphor, tone, pattern. Are there words or poems that arise from the making of images? Participants are encouraged to bring photographic gear of any kind, to serve as a springboard for an intersecting visual art and writing journey.
There will also be options to sketch, write potery, and learn about the natural history of the San Juans with presenters Abigail Morgan Prout, author of Walk Deep, and field guide Shauna Barrows.
Robert Dash’s 2017 book, On an Acre Shy of Eternity: Micro Landscapes at the Edge, won the Nautilus Book Award/ Best of Photography and Best of Self Published. This contemplative project was born from three years focusing on the poetry and beauty of the land where he and his partner, artist Ranna McNeil, reside. Acre Shy features photography which inspired poems, and poetry which inspired photographs.

Abigail grew up as a wild island hippie child on the bitsy island of Lopez in the Salish Sea. She surprised herself by returning to raise a family here. Walk Deep, her first book, won the 2021 Homebound Publications Poetry Prize, a 2023 Nautilus Book Award, and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Abigail is passionate about the role that nature and writing play in personal transformation and leadership. Abigail lives with her husband, Clive, and their children on Lopez Island. Most mornings you can find her rambling the island with her silky black lab, Bella.
Peter Möhlman lives in the San Juans and has a gallery and teaching program on Orcas Island. Peter was born in New Jersey and grew up in the Estonian-American community there and in New York City. He completed his high school years at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, immersed in the city's culture and art scene. After graduating from the Atlanta College of Art in 1992, he returned to New York where he created mural art in the bars and clubs of the East Village. He worked through the years as a sculptor, mold maker, encaustic painter, and eventually creating window displays world wide for Gucci. Leaping across the country, he spent time in Oregon and eventually settled in Alaska where he designed, built and sold furniture. Visiting Orcas over the last ten years, he became a full time resident in 2019 and joined the Orcas Island Artworks gallery. Since then he has has taken a deep dive into his love for land and seascapes, both in watercolor and acrylic.
